Creating real value at Woolwich Leisure Centre

Highlights from the Social Value created at Woolwich Leisure Centre

An element of our social value commitment is our approach to creating long-lasting, environmentally sustainable communities. But just as important is the social value we deliver into the people in the communities in which we build.

Our team at the WLC project have been implementing this approach from the very start of this project. To give you an example of some of the activities undertaken, here are the highlights of what's been happening in the last three months:

To date the team have:

  • Created 25 new jobs
  • Created 4 apprenticeships
  • 2 graduates working on the project
  • 1 Year-Out student on a paid placement
  • Provided 4 Greenwich students with work experience
  • Supported the delivery of one CCIAG (Construction Careers Information, Advice and Guidance) event
  • Mentored a second person
  • Supported 9 school/college/university engagement events
  • Engaged with 226 students
  • Invested 32 staff hours
  • Used the Knowledge Quad to deliver 2 rounds of CSCS card training, with 10 Greenwich residents gaining a CSCS card

JANUARY 2024

WIDER COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:

  • In January the team met with LSEC to discuss the college using the Knowledge Quad for two HND classes on a Wednesday and Friday. The team agreed for LSEC to view the Knowledge Quad with the teachers delivering the lessons.
  • The team met with Shooters Hill Sixth Form College in January to discuss collaboration. As the College is only delivering a multi-skill construction course, the team is planning a try-a-trade workshop and site tour once the relevant supply chain is on site. In the meantime, the team will support their upcoming careers fair on 5th March.
  • The team had a meeting with Local London Careers Hub East to discuss a site visit for Woolwich Polytechnic Boys Secondary School in March. The team are helping to organise this event.

DECEMBER 2023

WIDER COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:

  • In December, the team delivered the first round of CSCS card training to Greenwich residents. Five dedicated residents sat through the week-long course, delivered by Portland Training to complete their CSCS card training.
  • LSEC (London South East Colleges) held a Construction Employer Panel, where various contractors working in Greenwich came together to explore collaboration opportunities and discuss ways to support LSEC students.

NOVEMBER 2023:

WIDER COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:

  • On Saturday 11th November, a mum and her young child walked over to Woolwich Leisure Centre project site to see the site in action. They were invited onto site where they were provided with PPE and Project Manager Mike was on hand to answer all the questions they had about this exciting new project.
  • The Social Value team met with Cidori a training provider to discuss future collaboration. Morgan Sindall discussed the Knowledge Quad on the Woolwich Leisure Centre site compound, which is available to partners such as Cidori to deliver courses from. A second meeting was organised for January where Cidori will discuss their proposal with Morgan Sindall.
  • The Woolwich Leisure Centre team met with CACT (Charlton Athletic Community Trust), to discuss potential collaboration in the borough. The team provided CACT with examples of ways we can support CACT and together they explored many ways to collaborate. The team agreed to supporting an environmental project called Roots for Life. CACT will connect with the charity Roots for Life and organise a meet.
