SCAPEing Out a World of Work Tasters was developed by the SCAPE Community Legacy Group, chaired by Elizabeth Halliday, in response to the DYW aim to introduce young people to the full breadth of job roles and careers within construction.

The work tasters focused on four key areas including traditional roles, professional roles, digital roles and green roles.  The desired outcomes for the work tasters were:

  • To support industry with recruitment challenges.
  • Enable young people to be more informed about different job roles, reducing drop out of apprenticeships or jobs due to them not matching expectations.
  • The sector needs young people with the widest range of skillsets and interests to match the increased diversity of job roles in construction.
  • Work Tasters are an opportunity to improve young people’s perceptions of the construction sector.

The construction work tasters were aimed at 16-25 year olds at the Engine Shed in Stirling.

Digital Den

Our Digital Den is where you delve into the world of digital construction and learn more about technology’s place in the built environment. This work taster showcases some of the fantastic outputs from utilising computer-aided design, and how it interfaces with the rest of the construction process. This session was led by Morgan Sindall Construction.

Count on Us

COUNT On Us is where young people get involved calculating the cost of construction. This taster takes you into the world of Quantity Surveying; looking at cost and contracts in construction. Young people, working in teams, are required to cost and build a structure per the design and materials provided to them. This session was led by Morgan Sindall Construction.

A Greener Future

A Greener Future educates young people around the environmental aspects of construction. Young people get their hands dirty making Bee Bombs in order to support biodiversity and learn about the importance of this.  This session was led by Sweco.

Site Life

Site Life gives young people an insight into the tools needed to work on a site. With a variety of activities available ranging from setting out to surveying, this taster takes you into a day in the life of site operatives and the machines they use. This session was led by Balfour Beatty and McLaughlin & Harvey.

One Build at a Time

Historic Environment Scotland Stone Masons led a stonemasonry session providing young people with the opportunity to try stone masonry techniques carving letters into stone cubes. Tigers Group led a brickwork session providing the young people with an opportunity to try their hand at bricklaying.

We were also delighted to showcase Kenoteq’s k-briq which highlights the low carbon direction the construction industry is taking with the k-briq being made of 90% recycled construction waste and unfired manufacture resulting in an extremely low embodied carbon.

Let's Go Retro!

Historic Environment Scotland led the ‘Lets go Retro’ work taster introducing the young people to the need for refurbishment of the existing building stock and traditional job roles.

The feedback from the work tasters was phenomenal.  Collaboration with the SCAPE partners, HES and supporters enabled us to create something special for over 200 young people from across Scotland.
