Woodside & Gorbals Health & Care Centres

Morgan Sindall Construction delivered two brand-new primary care facilities to modernise the services available to patients in the Glasgow and Clyde area.

The health centres provided state of the art facilities for a range of services including social work, eight GP practices, children’s services, district nursing, health visiting, alcohol and drug recovery services, a day care centre for older people, a dental practice, as well as physiotherapy, podiatry, and sexual health services.

Our approach

The growing trend to house multi-disciplinary healthcare services in one setting, providing one easy access point for users and savings for NHS trusts meant that there were multiple clinicians and stakeholders involved in these projects. We worked with health and dental professionals and community representatives in a collaborative way at the design phase, utilising BIM technology prior to construction works commencing.

When delivering bespoke healthcare facilities for a growing community, engagement with those who will be using the building was also key to the project’s success.

With the Woodside Health Centre, the exterior artwork adorning the precast concrete panels was designed in consultation with the community, with ideas provided as to the images that should be used throughout. The final designs draw inspiration from historical architecture from the local area, natural surroundings of the nearby canal, and the culturally diverse backgrounds of the local community.

The projects exceeded their targets for job creation in the area, providing new start opportunities for those not employed or in education, along with apprenticeships and graduate positions.

Room for a growing community will ensure the facilities are adaptable to future requirements. Careful consideration was given to accommodating flexible work spaces. These spaces were situated on the top floor of the building with open ceilings, so that should they be adapted they will not loose their naturally light and airy feel. Something that is now considered best practice by the business and is utilised on other health care centre projects.

Our open and collaborative approach, means that we have been able to deliver sustainable healthcare facilities that are adaptable to the changing needs of the community. For me, these healthcare centres are an example of great design and forward-thinking, applied to a sector that, at times, has put function over form.
