Our approach
The project was carried out in a hospital environment above live operating theatres. Adjacent to the works were also the children’s ward and a cancer treatment centre. Infection control was of the highest order on site and the team worked closely with James Paget NHS Trust to ensure all measures taken on site were suited to the hospital. This included:
- Design of the site to ensure all construction activity was segregated from patient movements and live wards
- Regular meetings with the Trust staff and clinicians to agree working periods and access
- Agreement of delivery times with the NHS Estates department, with some deliveries accompanied by a police escort
- Direct phone line to our site manager so that works could be instantly stopped if needed
- Infection control measures, such as bespoke air conditioning systems to seal and protect cancer wards from dust
- Privacy screens and acoustic buffers installed

HealthcareSpreading Christmas cheer
With a long-history of working with the James Paget Hospital, each year the team like to do something to make the time in hospital that little bit easier for the children having to spend their Christmas holiday on the children’s ward.
Whilst on site, the team paid for local children’s entertainer Charlie Cheesecake and his brother Johnny Jaffacake to visit the children’s ward to entertain the youngsters, as well as supplying party food and presents.
Working with Morgan Sindall Construction has been a rewarding experience. Together we have delivered one of the most complex construction projects ever undertaken at the Trust. The construction work has been completed to a fantastic standard in an extremely sensitive location close to occupied hospital wards and departments.
I would absolutely recommend the team we’ve had here. Within the NHS there are ‘Value for Money’ exercises we conduct – on this project there’s been a happy balance between the value for money and the quality we received. So from our perspective we’d be pleased to work with Morgan Sindall Construction in the future and certainly would recommend them to colleagues across the UK.
