Overview

The Spine is the flagship project of Liverpool City Council’s £1bn Paddington Village development, which provides 1.8m sqft of science, technology, education and health space to cement Liverpool as an international destination for science.

For the first time in its 500-year history, The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) will be working from two main homes, each supporting around 200 staff. It has selected Liverpool as the home for its new Northern Centre of Clinical Excellence, and The Spine has been purpose built to accommodate.

Morgan Sindall delivered the shell & core of the 14-storey, 160,000 sq ft commercial building and provided CAT B fit out to level 6. The Spine’s anchor tenant, the Royal College of Physicians, occupy the top 7 floors which have been designed specifically to their requirements. It includes facilities for research, medical training, examination and conferencing with open plan office space and meeting rooms. Double height spaces provide break out areas, reception and a cafe.

The remaining floors provide flexible workspaces for like-minded industries, as well as a fine dining restaurant, a large bicycle and shower facility and under croft parking.

The Spine is a stunning building and very much reflects the 21st century. Its unique design and distinctive look also symbolises the ambitions we have for Paddington Village - to create an innovation district to rival any in the UK and Europe. I’m delighted the RCP will be calling this their northern home. They are joining a fantastic roster of world class institutions and am sure will help attract others to join them. Of course, it’s not just about beautiful buildings. Paddington Village is stimulating new jobs and new investment, creating opportunities that will fuel our economy and strengthen the Liverpool Powerhouse for decades to come.”

Mayor of Liverpool Joanne Anderson

The Spine’s breath-taking design does justice to what it represents for the future of our city. It symbolises the Council’s inspirational vision of ensuring that Liverpool can become an international leader in science and technology, creating the high skilled jobs that will drive both the local and national economies forward. The economic and social benefits of The Spine have already proven significant. As part of our work on this monumental project, we’re proud to have provided a sizeable skills boost for local people through creating jobs, apprenticeship and training programmes and hosting a range of events at our specially built Knowledge Quad within the Paddington Village site. It has been an absolute privilege for Morgan Sindall Construction to help deliver this sensational building and to be part of the wider Paddington Village development."
