Modern Slavery in the construction industry
Modern slavery in the construction industry is a significant problem globally, with various forms of worker exploitation occurring at different stages of the construction process.
A lot of exploitation can be hiding in plain sight, often due to its complex and subtle nature. Exploitation cases vary on a spectrum from unsafe working practices such as inadequate PPE,
to labour abuse and forced labour.
More examples include:
- Working more than 48+ hours a week
- Inadequate rest periods and access to basic amenities
- Not being paid the national minimum wage or having pay withheld
- Not having a contract of employment
- Tied accommodation
- Confinement or restricted movement, observed in transportation to and from work sites
- Monitoring
- Emotional / physical abuse
